GALERIE NICOLAS FOURNERY

Two large Chinese blue and white “figural” dishes. Kangxi period

Decorated in underglaze blue, with a scholar and a lady in leisure a garden accompanied by her maid, carrying a tray with a jug and two cups. An old man sits in a chariot accompanied by his attendant beside an architecture and a pierced ornamental rockwork, the scene possibly inspired by the Romance of the Western Chamber.

The base of the dishes are inscribed with the Bi Ding Ruyi mark, translates as ‘may all your dreams/aspirations come true’. It is associated with good luck in taking or passing the imperial exams.
