A very fine Chinese famille rose European subject plate. Qianlong

The plate decorated in the famille rose palette, with a central mythological medallion after the print “Femme nue et satyre” of the French artist Claude Duflos père (1665-1727). In a landscape, sitting at the foot of a flat hill beneath a tree is depicted a bearded satyr to whom a young woman is refusing his advances. In the background, the silhouette of a village can be seen by the edge of a river.

A very similar plate is in the collections of the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes (Lorient, inv. 2000.11.1), and published in Cargaisons de Chine – Porcelaines de la Compagnie des Indes du Musée de Lorient, 2002, p. 105, no 84.

A grisaille version is in the collection of the Musée Adrien Dubouché (Limoges, ex collection Paul Gasnault, inv. ADL 339).

Notice

The theme of the satyr has been widely disseminated in Western art and embodies bestiality and lust. In iconography, it is also found under the guise of the indiscreet observer. It is often depicted, in contrast to its apparent ugliness, among graceful young nymphs.
